There's a worldwide grid of underground service lines and piping that can become dismantled with one swift strike of a shovel. All it takes is one call to make sure an area is clear of these lines to dig. Plans to dig or move soil, whether from contractors or homeowners, are required to call 811 at least three to ten business days prior to breaking ground. This allows utility companies to come out and mark any underground lines they may have within the work site, indicated by colored flags, paint or chalk. In order to keep workers safe and prevent these facilities from being damaged, callers will answer a series of questions about the location and extent of the project.
